"We've had a very enthusiastic response from students about this choice," said Director Joseph DeMonico. "It's a show that doesn't limit you to anything; it allows us to stretch the imagination."
DeMonico says to expect the unexpected in this production. "It will be a Seuss-like world, but it will be atypical in its looks," he said. And the new theater will enable this show to be very interactive. "I want Seussical to ooze out off the stage, so the audience will feel part of it."
Seussical opened on Broadway in November 2000, and much of the dialogue is accomplished through songs that range from Latin to R&B to Pop music. "It feels like you've heard dialogue, but it's actually mostly sung," DeMonico said. The 42-member ensemble cast of the Cooper production will incorporate music, dance, acrobatics and sets that will delight the senses.
Donna Arnold is the show's music director, Elizabeth DeMonico is the choreographer and costume designer; Bob Scannell is the orchestra director, Rae Moses is the conductor, Steve Sandifer is the rehearsal accompanist and Troy Dingle is the audio engineer.
Seussical deals with issues that are appropriate for all ages: standing up for your beliefs, being true to your word, using your imagination, and accepting people for who they are.
DeMonico says the inaugural show on the stage of the new Performing Arts Center is one you don't want to miss. "If you've never seen it, you must come see it; if you've seen it before, come see it again, because it will be like nothing you've ever seen before."
