
THE WOODLANDS, TX – (Friday, October 24, 2008) –Over 400 aspiring artists competed in the annual poster contest for The Woodlands Wildflower Festival, a popular tradition set for Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 10 am until 2 pm at Cochran’s Crossing Shopping Center. Karin Beck, Sydney Robinson, Megan Parise and Katie Fiedler were the first place winners in the contest, according to Susan Vreeland-Wendt, director of marketing for The Woodlands Development Company (TWDC).
Karin Beck of Spring was the first place winner in the adult category and won $300. Beck created a detailed, colorful drawing of Texas Bluebonnets with a single Indian Paint Brush set against a background of greenery. Beck is an art teacher at The Woodlands College Park High School. Her drawing will become the official Wildflower Festival poster, sold at The Woodlands Lions Club booth during the event. Don Crouch of The Woodlands was the second place winner in the adult category with an assortment of Morning Glories, Poppies and Snapdragons. Third place in the adult category went to Jill Taylor of Montgomery for her depiction of Bluebonnets, Indian Blankets and Dogwoods that created a Texas flag.
Sydney Robinson of The Woodlands, and an art student of Beck’s, was the first place winner in the teenage category, 14-18 years of age, and won $100. Robinson’s drawing is an elaborative image of a sunflower set within a navy blue background. Her art will be displayed on the official tee-shirt sold at The Lions Club booth at the festival. Second place went to Seul Lee of Spring. Lee’s painting depicts a vivid field of daisies. Sara Squires of The Woodlands took third place in the teenage category for her sketch of a cardinal perched on a tree branch in The Woodlands.
Megan Parise of Spring won first place in the age 8-13 year old category and received $100. Parise drew a Texas Bluebonnet, Pink Evening Primrose, Mexican Hat and Indian Blanket surrounded by an orange sunset. Second place was awarded to Jessica Brown of The Woodlands. Her painting depicted a variety of wildflowers including the Texas Bluebonnet and Indian Paint Brush, complete with bees and butterflies. Catherine Bacon and Claire Mancuso of The Woodlands tied for third place in this category. Bacon drew a hummingbird gathering nectar from wildflowers while Mancuso drew Mexican Hat wildflowers.
In the youngest category, up to seven years of age, Katherine “Katie” Fiedler of Shenandoah won first place and was presented $100. Fiedler drew birds flying over wildflowers on a sunny day. Second place went to Mila Johnston of The Woodlands for her field of wildflowers. A third place tie went to Cassandra Castillo and Kate Cleveland who both created an assortment of wildflowers.
A special award, “Most Creative”, went to nine-year old John Miggins for his “Wildflower Band”, a group of wildflower musicians performing in The Woodlands.
The merchants at Cochran’s Crossing Shopping Center, the Community Associations of The Woodlands and The Woodlands Development Company are the presenting sponsors of the festival. The Brickman Group, Ltd. is a participating sponsor.
Proceeds from the tee-shirt and poster sales benefit The Woodlands Lions Club.
At the festival, 15 different varieties of free wildflower seeds will be distributed by local businesses. Also featured will be informative landscaping and environmental exhibits, native plants and gift items for sale, a free petting zoo and pony rides, balloon artist, face painting, food and family fun. Lovable mascot of The Woodlands, Puffy Pine Cone, will make a special guest appearance from 11 am until 12 noon.
