Students Score Big at The Cynthia Woods
Mitchell Pavilion’s Musical Scores

The Woodlands, Texas – Approximately 5,400 students are expected to attend the 15th annual Musical Scores educational outreach program at The Center for the Performing Arts at The Woodlands, home of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. The event takes place from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on May 6. Twenty-eight schools from 10 school districts plan to attend. For a complete list of participating districts and schools, see page 3.

Musical Scores begins at 10 a.m. on May 6 with Jean Donatto, master of ceremonies and the exceptional student recognition and awards. Brandon Albright, with BREAK! The Urban Funk Spectacular is the guest speaker for the event, giving the children a motivational speech. Immediately following Albright, the students enjoy non-stop entertainment by the Rockets Launch Crew, BREAK! and Black Violin. The Launch Crew is a high-energy performance of aerobic dance, tumbling, acrobatics and audience interaction. BREAK!, the Urban Funk Spectacular, traces the history of hip-hop dancing over the last 30 years. Cast members are supremely talented artists from the world of “break dancing”, “locking”, “electric boogaloo” or “popping,” power tumbling and DJ-ing. Black Violin is a group of classically trained violinist who play a fusion of hip-hop, jazz, rock, blues and more. Their influences include everything from Bach to Nas and Jay-Z.

Since its inception in 1995, Musical Scores, one of The Pavilion’s most successful educational outreach programs, has grown from serving 200 students its first year to 5,400 students this year. The program primarily serves “at-risk,” low income, middle school students who earn the privilege to attend a special event at The Pavilion by displaying model behavior and achieving specific scholastic goals. To be rewarded, students must achieve specific goals as established by their teachers and/or administrators. These goals might include specific academic accomplishments, improving attendance, book-reading objectives, raising test scores, modifying classroom behavior, or whatever the administrators choose. Once the students have achieved their goals, or "musical scores," they are rewarded to a free performance and lunch at The Pavilion. The students also receive complimentary Musical Scores T-shirts for their achievement.

For the past several years, The Pavilion has worked with Carver Magnet High School graphic arts students to create the t-shirt artwork for Musical Scores. A gifted senior, Jahoward Hutchins, was the t-shirt design winner for this year. Hutchins was one of the 28 students from Carver’s graphic arts program who submitted artwork for consideration as the featured design on this year’s Musical Scores t-shirts. These complimentary t-shirts, along with free lunches, are given out to all students in attendance.

Hutchins’s design, chosen by members of The Pavilion’s Board of Directors was the best visual representation of the Musical Scores program. Hutchins, along with 15 other students from the class, are attending the event on May 6.

Megan McEntire, the teacher who coordinated the t-shirt design contest through her Electronic Media classes said, “This design competition is a rare and wonderful opportunity for the students. Every student is able to learn something through their work in this competition. I personally enjoy the surprise of the winning design and coaching my students towards their resolved projects.”

Musical Scores is generously sponsored by ARAMARK Sports & Entertainment, Chevron Phillips, CB&I, Hewitt Associates, Linn Energy, John P. McGovern Foundation, Union Pacific, The Pavilion Partners, Entergy, Huntsman Corporation, The Pepsi Bottling Company, Continental Airlines, official airline of The Pavilion, Chick-fil-A and Calfee Specialties.
