The Woodlands, Texas –The Woodlands Development Company became a part of history helping bring back The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion bigger and better than ever. The Development Company donated $250,000 to The Pavilion to benefit the restoration of the venue following destruction from Hurricane Ike.
During Hurricane Ike in September 2008, The Pavilion suffered catastrophic damage to its fabric roof and support structure over the reserved seating area. Structural engineers determined that the venue could not be used for public gatherings until the roof system and its steel supports were repaired. Other damage to the venue included the stage house and its roof panels, the event tent, lawn concession stands and erosion.
Forced to cancel the last 10 shows of the season, Pavilion management and its Board of Directors decided to rebuild the venue, making much needed improvements. The $9.5 million renovation included construction of approximately 2,000 new reserved seats and a larger canopy structure to cover all 6,387 seats. Lawn capacity is now 9,653, giving The Pavilion a total capacity of 16,040. The Pavilion opened up for its 20th season May 1.
“The Woodlands Development Company salutes The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on the completion of its major renovation in time for its 20th season,” said Alex Sutton and Tim Welbes, co-presidents of TWDC. “We are proud to continue our partnership with The Pavilion in bringing cultural, educational and performing arts programming to The Woodlands and the greater Houston area.”
The Development Company has been a long supporter of The Pavilion’s performing arts. The Development Company has been the title sponsor for Star-Spangled Salute for the past 20 years. The Star-Spangled Salute is a family-favorite concert with the Houston Symphony held on July 3.
The Woodlands Development Company is the developer of The Woodlands, a 28,000-acre, master-planned community located 27 miles north of downtown Houston. The Woodlands is currently the #1 best selling community in Texas and #3 in the nation. The Woodlands Development Company is a limited partnership of Morgan Stanley and General Growth Properties, Inc.
