The Woodlands, TX - The Woodlands Township Board of Directors has proclaimed April 29, 2010, as Cynthia Woods Mitchell Day for Mrs. Mitchell’s efforts in creating one of the most special communities in all of the world.
Chairman of the Board of The Woodlands Township, Nelda Luce Blair, presented a special proclamation in Mrs. Mitchell’s memory to her surviving spouse, Mr. George Mitchell, at a recent Township Board of Directors meeting. Mr. Mitchell is the visionary founder of The Woodlands.
“Without the dream of Mr. and Mrs. George Mitchell, we would not have The Woodlands,” said Chairman Blair. “Their vision, their commitment and their passion to create one of the finest communities in the world have come to fruition. We are extremely grateful and appreciative of the efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell.”
Mrs. Mitchell, who was instrumental in giving The Woodlands its name, was a patron of the arts who envisioned The Woodlands as having a place where everyone, not just the elite, could enjoy symphonies, operas and ballets. Her dream became The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, celebrating its 20th season in 2009. Mrs. Mitchell passed away after a lengthy illness on December 27, 2009, but will long be remembered in The Woodlands for her many contributions. The Houston Symphony will be conducting a special concert in her honor on Cynthia Woods Mitchell Day in The Woodlands on April 29, 2010.
“The tribute concert on April 29 will be a celebration of the life of Cynthia Mitchell and the music she loved,” said Jerry MacDonald, president and CEO of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. “It will be the perfect opportunity for The Woodlands community to gather and pay tribute to the amazing woman that Cynthia Mitchell was and to celebrate the enormous impact she had on shaping The Pavilion and our community.”
The Tribute Concert to Cynthia Woods Mitchell is set for 7:30 p.m. on April 29, 2010. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Before the concert, guests are invited to join the pre-concert activities in the plaza that include strolling artists, arts and crafts for children, an instrument petting zoo, side stage entertainment and more. Also taking place before the concert, from 5:30-6:45 p.m., is the Hats Off to Reading Celebration in the Event Tent. This area features face painting, hat making and bookmark crafts, as well as a free book for every child who stops by. Other celebratory activities honoring Cynthia Mitchell’s love of life and music will take place prior to the concert.
Mezzanine and lawn seating are free for the concert and tickets are not required for these areas. Lawn chairs are free and picnics are welcome, however beverages cannot be brought into the venue. Orchestra-level tickets are $15 and go on sale at noon on March 22, 2010. Tickets can be purchased at The Pavilion Ticket Office and all Ticketmaster outlets. More information about the Tribute Concert to Cynthia Woods Mitchell will be available March 11, 2010, on The Pavilion’s web site at www.woodlandscenter.org.
