“RUNNING MAN” SCULPTURE INSTALLED IN EAST SHORE

51st Piece of Sculpture in The Woodlands’ Collection

THE WOODLANDS, TX – (June 10, 2008) – “Running Man”, a kinetic sculpture by Jeffery Laudenslager, has been installed in Running Man Park in the enclave of East Shore in The Woodlands, according to Dan Leverett, vice president of commercial for The Woodlands Development Company. “Running Man” is the 51st piece of sculpture in The Woodlands’ collection.

The new “Running Man” sculpture by Jeffery Laudenslager stands in the park that bears its name in the lakeside community of East Shore in The Woodlands.

“Jeffery Laudenslager is a master of creating kinetic metal sculptures, and we are thrilled to have ‘Running Man’ in our collection,” said Leverett.  A resident of Encinitas, CA, Laudenslager exhibits his work in Southern and Northern California, Boca Raton, Florida and Sedona, Arizona. He has had numerous solo exhibitions, and his works have been part of many public collections including Pacific Center, San Diego; San Diego International Airport; Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA; and American Airlines, Los Angeles, CA.

“Running Man” is 25 feet high and 17 feet wide at its widest point, and weighs 277 pounds. It is constructed of brushed stainless steel and titanium with stainless steel bearings. The sculpture is sited on a small pond in Running Man Park, which was designed around the sculpture by Clark Condon Associates of Houston. East Shore, the “Garden District” of The Woodlands Town Center, is located on the eastern shore of 200-acre Lake Woodlands.  This urban enclave includes several formal garden parks, street trees and sculptural elements that heighten the pedestrian experience.

“’Running Man’, with its graceful, ever-changing movements, is ideal for this urban garden setting,” said Leverett. “The sculpture helps define the space and further distinguishes East Shore as a walkable environment.”

The sculpture acquisition program in The Woodlands has been ongoing since the community’s founding in 1974 when “The Family” by Charles Pebworth was installed at the main entrance on Woodlands Parkway.  “Our collection of sculptures is another reason why The Woodlands is unique,” Leverett said. “It’s one of the largest and most impressive collections of public art in the country.”

The Woodlands is a 28,000-acre master-planned community located 27 mile north of downtown Houston.  It is a project of The Woodlands Development Company, a limited partnership of Morgan Stanley and General Growth Properties, Inc.
