THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- June 5, 2008 – Prepare Ye!  Town Center Theatre, Montgomery County’s first professional theater company, will be presenting Godspell, the award-winning musical based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, at The Woodlands College Park High School Auditorium, located at 3701 College Park Drive, July 11 – Aug. 3, 2008.

Developed by Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak, Godspell opened off-Broadway in 1971, and has since played in various touring companies and revivals, becoming one of the most successful musicals in history.  Its popularity has resulted in the release of several cast albums over the years, a film version of the show, and several indelible musical numbers that have become ingrained in our popular culture, including the hit song "Day By Day."

According to Artistic Director Joseph Milillo, what has made Godspell so popular and enduring over the years is its immediacy.  “The beauty of this show is that it takes place in the here and now, illustrating the universality of God’s message,” Milillo said.  “Past productions have been set in museums, playgrounds, classrooms, on top of buildings, city streets and even the future!”      

For Town Center Theatre’s production, Milillo has decided to place the action of the show in the middle of one of The Woodlands’s most popular shopping destinations: Market Street.  “Market Street has become one of the area’s most well-known landmarks, containing several visual elements that are both aesthetically pleasing and easily translatable to the stage,” Milillo said.  “Because we want to give this production a ‘local’ feel, as well as convey the idea that the teachings of the Gospel are applicable in any environment, we thought audiences would have fun seeing the parables reenacted in a familiar setting.”

Godspell runs from July 11 through August 3, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.  Tickets are available at $25 for regular patrons, $20 for seniors age 55 and over; and $15 for students.  For groups of 10 or more, all tickets are $15.  To make your reservation, call (832) 592-9697, Ext. 2.
