The Woodlands Wildflower Festival Poster Contest Winners Announced

There were 47 aspiring artists who competed in the annual poster contest for The Woodlands Wildflower Festival, a popular tradition set for Saturday, October 27, 2007 from 10 am until 2 pm at Cochran's Crossing Shopping Center. Nicole Sevier-Vuyk, Taylor Turner, Jessica Brown and Reisey Thomas were the first place winners in the contest, according to Susan Vreeland-Wendt, director of marketing for The Woodlands Development Company (TWDC).

Nicole Sevier-Vuyk of The Woodlands was the first place winner in the adult category and won $300. Sevier-Vuyk created a detailed, colorful drawing of a single Indian Blanket set against a vivid green background. Her drawing will become the official Wildflower Festival poster, sold at The Woodlands Lions Club booth during the event. Tammie Alsup of The Woodlands was the second place winner in the adult category showing a young girl tippie-toeing through wildflowers.

Taylor Turner of The Woodlands was the first place winner in the teenage category, 14-18 years of age and won $100. Taylor's drawing depicts a hummingbird hovering over wildflowers while drinking nectar. Texas Bluebonnets are in the background. Her drawing will be displayed on the official tee-shirt sold at The Lions

Club booth at the festival. Taylor, who is 14, is a two-time consecutive winner, winning first place in the age 8-13 year old category in 2006. Second place went to Claire Lewoczko of The Woodlands for her drawing of an assortment of wildflowers.

Ten-year old resident of The Woodlands, Jessica Brown, won first place in the age 8-13 year old category and received $100. Brown drew a variety of wildflowers including Texas Bluebonnets, set on a blue-sky background. Megan Parise of Spring won second place for her drawing of a butterfly sitting on wildflowers on a sunny day.

In the youngest category, up to seven years of age, six-year old Reisey Thomas of The Woodlands created a water-painting of wildflowers and was presented $100. Second place went to Sydney Ledden of The Woodlands who drew wildflowers, complete with hummingbirds, bees and butterflies.

The merchants at Cochran's Crossing Shopping Center, the Community Associations of The Woodlands and The Woodlands Development Company are the presenting sponsors of the festival. The Brickman Group, Ltd., a local landscaping company, is the participating sponsor while Coldwell Banker United – The Woodlands is an associate sponsor. Proceeds from the tee-shirt and poster sales benefit The Woodlands Lions Club.

At the festival, 22 different varieties of free wildflower seeds will be distributed by local businesses. Also featured will be informative landscaping and environmental exhibits, native plants and gift items for sale, a free petting zoo and pony rides, balloon artist, face painting, food and family fun. Lovable mascot of The Woodlands, Puffy Pine Cone, will make a special guest appearance from 11 am until 12 noon.

The Woodlands is a 28,000-acre master-planned community located 27 miles north of downtown Houston. It is a project of The Woodlands Development Company, a limited partnership of Morgan Stanley and General Growth Properties, Inc.
