Experience Mendelssohn’s Scottish Odyssey at The Pavilion Sept. 29

Join Conductor Hans Graf as he leads the Houston Symphony in a melodious concert inspired by Scotland – Mendelssohn’s Scottish Odyssey – Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Enjoy an evening under the stars with free lawn seating and great classical music.

Many of Felix Mendelssohn’s most famous works were composed from fragments sketched in countries he visited in his travels as a young man. One of the works featured in this concert is "Hebrides Overture," inspired by his trip to Fingal’s Cave in Scotland. Using traditional orchestra pieces, doubled winds, timpani and strings, the piece boasts remarkable richness and musical complexities. The music recalls a rocky stretch of seacoast in Scotland and clearly depicts the power of the surf against massive rocks. Mendelssohn’s other featured work, "Scottish Symphony," also originated from his visit to Scotland. This piece is not based on Scottish folk songs, but rather how the trip made Mendelssohn feel emotionally.

Pre-concert activities begin at 6:30 p.m. Events include The Pavilion Partners’ “instrument petting zoo” where youngsters can get up close and personal with beautifully crafted musical instruments. At 6:45p.m., The Pavilion hosts a free discussion with Ira J. Black, noted music scholar and professor. Pavilion Talk offers insight into the evening’s performance.

Join the Houston Symphony for Scottish OdysseySept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Reserved seating tickets range from $10 - $15 with free lawn seating sponsored by The Wortham Foundation, ticket or voucher required.

Free lawn chairs also are available for guests sitting on the lawn. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and sit on the hill for an evening of Mendelssohn’s melodies! Keep in mind that beverages cannot be brought into the venue.

Preferred parking is available in the on-site Town Center Garage, located along Six Pines Drive. Parking is $5 per vehicle for this and most performing arts events. Tickets for on-site parking can be purchased in advance at all Ticketmaster locations and The Pavilion Ticket Office.

Symphony guests are invited to bring their Sept. 29 Scottish Odyssey ticket or ticket stub to Chipotle’s Market Street location at 9595 Six Pines Drive to receive a FREE BURRITO. This offer may be redeemed on Sept. 29 or 30 only. Limit one burrito per ticket per person.
