Insperity Extends Sponsorship with Champions Tour Through 2016
The Champions Tour and Insperity announced an agreement on Wednesday that Insperity has extended its title sponsorship of the Insperity Championship presented by UnitedHealthcare through 2016.
“We are pleased to extend our sponsorship of this prestigious Champions Tour event,” said Paul J. Sarvadi, Insperity Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “The Insperity Championship provides a great economic boost for local businesses, which reflects our corporate mission of helping businesses succeed so communitiies prosper. In addition, the tournament delivers an exciting, highly competitive event year-after-year, featuring a top-level Champions Tour field, and we look forward to continuing that tradition for the community through 2016.”
“Insperity’s business mission has had a direct impact on the Championship, helping it grow and prosper during their tenure,” said Champions Tour President Mike Stevens. “Insperity’s commitment through 2016 will allow the tournament to contribute significant proceeds to local charities and provide an economic impact in the area.”
The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course will host the Insperity Championship for a fifth consecutive year this week.
“I am very pleased and excited that Insperity has agreed to extend their sponsorship of the Insperity Championship through 2016,” said Bryan Naugle, Executive Director of the Championship. “Insperity has been committed to the tradition of excellence the tournament created since its inception nine years ago, and has created significant charitable contributions benefiting our local community.”
Fuzzy’s Fourth Ecstatic with Golden Opportunity
When John Pierrel was forced to put his golf clubs in the garage four months ago to have knee surgery, little did the recreational player know the first time he’d tee it up again would be with one of the game’s greatest personalities and competitors.
Pierrel, of Conroe, TX, won the Insperity Championship’s online and social media contest, “Fuzzy Needs a Fourth,” giving him the opportunity to play with Fuzzy Zoeller in Wednesday’s Woodforest National Bank Pro-Am at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course.
“I was the happiest guy in Houston when I found out I won a free round to play with Fuzzy,” said Pierrel, who retired last year after dedicating 37 years of his life working in the oil and gas industry.
In addition to playing golf with the 10-time winner on the PGA TOUR, including the 1979 Masters and 1984 U.S. Open, Pierrel jumped at the chance to attend the tournament Pairings Party on Tuesday, and received a Pro-Am gift package as well as accommodation for two nights at a local tournament hotel. The package is valued at $5,000.
“When Bryan (Naugle, Executive Director of the Insperity Championship) came to me with this contest, I thought it was a heck of an idea,” said Zoeller, who has two Champions Tour victories, including the 2002 Senior PGA Championship. “I always like new ideas and nobody has ever done that before. I am glad it worked out. We had a great time today.”
Commonly heard whistling his way down the fairways, the tunes heard in Fuzzy’s foursome on this memorable outing were from the stereo blaring in the back of his golf cart as he and Pierrel completed a group best-ball score of 3-under-par 69.
“Having just had his knee replaced, John did really well today and I was very impressed,” said Zoeller, who only had one tip for the golf fanatic. “I told him not to hit it in the water. Those balls don’t float!”
The tips, music and company made for a relaxed atmosphere which unquestionably locked up another member ti the colorful Zoeller’s worldwide following of “Fuzzy Fans.”
“We had great company and I love golf. It doesn’t get much better than this,” said Pierrel. “It was really a special day for me. I thank Insperity, and others, who allowed this to happen. It was a great time and I will never forget it.”
Neither will Fuzzy!
What the Pros are Saying
Defending champion Brad Faxon
“The course is beautiful and the greens are quick. My game is good. I’ve had a few good days practicing at home, and have turned a corner, so I’m ready. I like fighting out of the darkness sometimes. That’s what makes you tougher.”
“ You are always trying to improve. It is very rare that all pieces of your game are working together. The guys that are great players find ways to win when they aren’t doing something well.”
Jeff Freeman on making Champions Tour debut
“I didn’t know what to expect when I went out to Q-school, and lo and behold I played pretty well and won medalist honors. I’m looking forward to this week. It seems like a laid back Tour. I’ve played lots of golf with quite a few of these guys. I love to play golf and love to compete. If I can stay out of my own way I’ll be fine. I hope I can play the same as I did at Q-school. It is great to have another chance.”
Jim Carter Wins Wednesday Woodforest National Bank Pro-Am
Team Carter fired the low round of the day at 53 in Wednesday’s Woodforest National Bank Pro-Am at The Woodlands Country Club Tournament Course.
Jim Carter joined forces with amateur partners, Ron McGee, Bob Gibbens, Mark Allen and Charlie Hartland, to win the first of two Pro-Am events this week.
Fred Couples Withdraws from Insperity Championship
Local favorite, Fred Couples withdrew from the 2012 Insperity Championship Wednesday morning after coming down with the flu last Sunday.
“Obviously, given my success in Houston and my ties to the area, I was really looking forward to playing in the Insperity Championship, but I have a high fever and don’t feel very well. My health right now will not allow me to be there this year,” said Couples. “I hope I feel better soon so that I can compete next week at The PLAYERS.”
The winner of the 2010 Insperity Championship will be replaced in the field by Sonny Skinner.

Quote of the Day
“I think it is great that Jack, Arnold and Gary are playing together. I’m going back out to watch them when I’m done (on Saturday). I hope I don’t have the chance to watch too many holes.”
